Hi! This is going to be my second movie review. Today I'm talking about a movie that I watched yesterday by the name of Eighth Grade. This was an extremely low budget but also an underrated movie. I feel like if this was better advertised and known to more people, its box office would've been a lot higher than it is now. It is talking about a girl Kayla Who goes through a tough time in middle school, with her being self conscious and having no friends. In the end she does have like one or two which is an improvement from the beginning of the book.
The lighting was all well, and it was low budget because of the setting. It wasn't some movie in outer space, but was everyday life. The characters were all stereotypical though.
The main character, Kayla, who was played really well by Elsie Fisher, was someone who tried desperately to be cool. In school she tried to encourage herself to talk to the cool kids, even though she wasn't that type. I'm not saying that she wasn't cool, but in her school, the kids that were so called "cool" had almost no social skills, and could only talk to other people who had their eyes stuck to their screens. Despite her awkwardness in school, when she got home, whenever her father was nice to her, she would just thrash back at him, acting like an edgy teenager who wanted away from her family and just hang out with her friends, which Kayla is not. I was glad when she finally found Gabe, someone who would actually be a good friend to her, because they shared a lot in common.
Kayla also in the beginning desperately wanted to get Aiden , her crush. When she heard that Aiden didn't want to go out with a girl because she wouldn't send him nudes, she told him that she had nudes. Despite everyone saying that Aiden was a jerk, and me myself seeing nothing good in him, she still wanted him. She liked him to the point that she actually wanted to learn how to give a blowjob, and not just a regular one, a good one. You would get that reference if you had watched the movie.
I feel like in this entire movie, the only good actors and actresses playing Kayla, her father, and Gabe. The other actors required no skill whatsoever. They just needed to be on their phone and say maybe one or two words every time they appear on the screen.
This leads me to my next paragraph. I felt like the movie took the stereotype that teenagers are always on their phone, and took it to the next level. All the eighth graders in my school, even if they do nothing but go on their phone at home, at school, they still socialize with their friends, and will look up if you are talking to them. Not a single person I know, not even at my school, would ignore people the point at which Kennedy Graves ignored them. I think the movie tried to make Kennedy look like the bad girl who didn't care about others feelings, but they did it in an unrealistic way. They made Kennedy and their friends people that you just wouldn't be able to find in the real world. I would say that they should've done something like make Kennedy a bully who likes to be mean to other people, but in the movie, she is just an unrealistic teen that can't process a single word that she hears.
Alright that's it for this movie review. Huh i just realized how much longer it is than my first movie review. Look! Improvement already!
Well stay tuned for more of this kind of content or anything else that you want me to blog about!
Thanks!
