This is a huge problem that has been going on presently. Catalonia, a province in Spain, is declaring independence. Some of the reasons are similar to that of Britain and Brexit. This topic has also been used in various debates, having reasons on both sides. About 20% of Spain's early income is all from Catalonia. Catalonia gives billions per year, but doesn't get as much money in return. Because Catalonia is located next to water, 40% of imports and exports going through Spain happen in Catalonia.
One of the main arguments of why Catalonia should be a free country is because they have their own dialect. But it is called Catalan Spanish, so it is similar to Spanish. This is similar to in China. There are multiple provinces all with their own language. Some of them when speaking Chinese sounds nothing like another province's language, yet they are all still one nation. But there is a flaw in this argument. Catalan Spanish isn't the only language. There are others, such as Basque or Galician. There is more than one language, but there aren't any other provinces demanding freedom.
Around the 1970s, when Spain was writing its constitution, representatives from all 50 provinces came and signed a agreement that Spain had direct control over them. Spain uses this as an argument to Catalonia why they can't be free. But Catalonia uses this, saying that it is outdated. Also the fact that Spain is run on a democracy defies this. That agreement is what they say close to dictatorship, with Spain controlling them all.
There is more, but tune in for a Part 2 of Catalonia and Spain's conflict!
